Digital Fabrication Training

The Fab Lab staff regularly offers training sessions for students wishing to learn how to use the equipment in the Fab Lab. Some equipment is restricted to those students who have attended a training session, while other sessions are not required - but heavily suggested nonetheless.

There are 4 different sessions which are currently being offered:

Topic Required? Duration Description
Laser Cutting Yes 1 hour Overview of the ULS and Epilog laser cutters, software requirements and possible materials.
CNC Machining Yes 90 minutes Overview of the MaxNC and ShopBot mills as well as MillWizard, RhinoCAM, and FeatureCAM software packages. Templating and milling operations, and material and router bit discussions.
Rapid Prototyping No 1 hour Summary of all rapid prototyping processes, with a focus on Stratasys FDM process and zCorp 3D Printing process. Job preparation via Insight and zPrint software, and file requirements from your 3D modeler.
3D Scanning No 1 hour Overview of touch-probe scanning using either the MicroScribe digitizing arm or ShopBot digitizing attachment.

Additionally, 2 sessions are either offered infrequently or will be offered in the near future:

Vacuum Forming No 15 minutes Operation of the Formech vacuum former. Mold design considerations and possible materials.
Foam Cutting Yes TBA Operation of the FoamLinx hot wire foam cutter. Software requirements and possible materials.
